Leo's breakfast.

Ink and Inktense pencils for color. I miss drawing food. Used Leo's breakfast photo for reference. My food today was not that pretty, I created weird chinese stir-fried dish with coconut milk, rice wine, soy and bunch of vegetables, and rice pasta. Not drawable, but edible.

Red auto.

Small trip to "Century 21" (department store in Brooklyn, where you can buy cool designer clothes for fraction of the cost, not for me though, because for me exist only art tools and books), turned into a pleasant adventure, I met this old red car. I used ink and a bit of watercolor and outlined with Hero pen using nib from both sides. I love this pen's versatility, the only problem it runs out of ink very quickly. And I am not carrying bottle of ink with me since that time in my student years in Moscow when wind overturned bottle of ink and my stepmother's white mackintosh was all covered with black-and-purple spots.

New stuff from JetPens.

I got cool stuff from JetPens. This online store can cure even hypochondriac. I finally got more ink and few water brushes, couple of white pens for highlights, super thin eraser, two tiny ink brush pens in orange and blue, 0.3 pen Pieni. :-)

View from the window.

View from the window on 7 Avenue in Manhattan. I mixed inks and touch of watercolor, used couple of markers. It was interesting and challenging to draw from bird's point of view. I outlined with Hero pen with bent nib.

Wall, glazing.

Focal point of the room. Glazed panels.
Rest of the walls would be muted flat paint ochre sort of color. Designer keep changing colors, I never met him, he asked for my card, as well as doorman and super. I love to play with textures.

F train, July 25.

Today's sketches, NY Subway. First used Perfect pencil, felt a bit too hard, then Shorty. I forgot how soft and pleasant Shorty's lead feels. I don't draw enough. Here is a photo of my drawing gear: Perfect pencil Faber-Castell, it says B, but on this paper feels much harder. Then my antique triangle pencil, Uranus Multi pen and Shorty pencil. I was soaking wet from strolling around the City under the rain (felt like after water ride in 6 Flags), but it felt good to be alive, sketch and think. Tomorrow going again.

Street Food.

Typical scene in Manhattan, street food stand with attractive umbrella. My favorite was at 14 street Downtown, (when we did mural with Brooklyn bridge and Twin towers in one loft), I use to get sausage on a stick there for lunch. Unforgettable.  Anyway here couple of inks and Kuretake pens for color. I got clipboard with storage, but my drawings with it hairy edges doesn't fit in. It is around 12x9.

Car I met in the mountains.

It was pretty strange to meet this car somewhere in the mountains, don't even know where, we GPS-ed Home Depot along the road to pick up a belt for an injured young athlete. Don't even know how old is this beauty. Ink and red Kuretake pen on old paper.

Boy's side of the room. Above the bed.

Sketch before breakfast Upstate.

I took watercolor with me and sketched  a view from the porch in the morning, it was fun to play with all that shades of green. Then I was called in for breakfast and it was no more sketches that day, but traveling and seeing old friends and eating amazing greek food.
Here sketching in a process, my cool gear.

Sketch in the morning.

Sketch in my little Hand*book in the waiting room with antique triangle pencil. Unfortunately people kept looking back at me so I had to pretend I am doing something else, so drew only one page. I tried interesting technique to draw faces from the bottom, treating it  as geometrical shapes, trying to follow spaces between shapes, lots of fun. I tried to forget that it is noses, lips, eyes.

House concert.

The idea of music and musicians was always very close to my heart. My senior work in my first college was composition Music, very experimental and sort of breaking rules. I was signed to go to  draw at rehearsals and concerts in Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra for a month or two. Even had a crush on young violinist. But here I am speaking in Ink and it is so new and exiting for me.

Celebration.

Celebration. Color only on ties, hinting that joy and emotions does not have to be shown on the surface, but inside, lightening up in faces and souls. Background - a little abstract, indicating community: people and houses.
Used 2 inks and couple of Kuretake pens for color.

Kitchen in metallic stone blocks technique.

This kitchen is in apartment in Brooklyn. The owner requested dark color so it with correspond with black granite vertical tiles around the counter.
I covered old ugly formica structure near the ceiling with the same technique and did metallic wash on bluish color ceiling resembling evening sky.
I enjoy playing with textures. Grout is silverish.

More Subway sketches with Antique pencil and Perfect pencil.

First I used my pretty hard antique pencil.
Then I switched to Perfect pencil, B softness, still feels a bit too hard. Seems people didn't notice I drew them.

Sketches with antique pencil.

I feel bad to fill up little sketchbook with such simple sketches but this is the only way to make my trips fun and easy. Books I am reading too heavy to carry.

Sunday, July 10, 2011

Went for a walk before breakfast. Brighton Beach.

I snapped few photos on my phone.
I forgot how interesting beach is, how nice to swim.
We saw giant medusa, almost stepped on it.

Shabbos.

I used textures to show the reality behind sort of surface, to look as it is inside of something, like looking through the stone. I wanted to do it for a very long time and this one is the closest so far. Looking trough time.

Medical office.

Even I got bossed around I scribbled few faces in Moleskine with my antique triangle pencil.

Spread in Moleskine.

I feel bad wasting Moleskine pages on such momentarily sketches and probably should draw something more significant on the top, but otherwise I will have empty moments of waiting, holes in my life. So here half of the landscape was blocked by other cars so I managed to scribble between car windows and people's heads.
